I’ve picked back up an old project, and of course my first action is to play with the logo. I gravitate towards bright colors, so I decided to embrace it and get a fun 60s typeface to go with it. I’m using FunkyDori, which is on sale here for all you interested type nerds. There’s a ton of alternate characters and embellishments and I ADORE IT.

As I play with the site design I’ll fine-tune this logo, but I’m really happy with it so far. ^__^

I made a decision today.

BSSMF is going on a hiatus, effective immediately. I know that’s a pretty crummy thing to do on update day, but I hope you’ll bear with me as I explain why I made this decision, and what plans I have for the future of my work, including the comic.

Without divulging too much of my personal situation, I have been unemployed for many months now. This in conjunction with my rural location and inability to drive (bad eyes, says the comic artist!) has me in a less-than-ideal situation. An entire week or more can (and has) gone by where I don’t interact with anyone but my boyfriend, or even leave the apartment.

I am sad. A lot. I’m not good at reconciling that this one small space is my living place and my work place and my leisure place and anything in-between. I can’t even leave it to get a coffee down the street for a change of scenery, because there isn’t anything down the street.

Sometimes I do get to see other people, and they are people I really do like. But I miss being around people who share my passion for my career or hobbies. As much as my teenaged self would recoil at hearing this, I need people to interact with on a regular basis, to drive and inspire me. One cannot exist in a vacuum. Or they get very, very sad.

The comic has come to feel like a chore, and I never want to dread it like this. I love it and I have so many ideas for it, but I can see it hindering me regularly. I didn’t give myself enough buffer (or any) before I started, or plan enough, and now every week is a scramble. I don’t do other art because I know I should be doing a page, so instead I ignore everything and sit in the dark watching cartoons lamenting my lack of growth as an artist. All that does is feed the sad.

So today, after a poorly-timed conversation in the car where I mostly cried, I think I have made some decisions about how I want to do things this month. The first being, as you know, to put the comic on hiatus for a bit.

Dan’s reaction, as many of yours may be, was one of worry. He doesn’t want to see this stop, and neither do I. It’s very easy to see this as “quitting when things get hard”, which isn’t my intent of course. More like, pausing before I start to hate it entirely. I’m sad that I don’t work on something creative every day. I don’t even work on pages every day, which I should. Which brings us to the second change, which is a bit of compromise between my idea and Dan’s.

Every weekday, either here or on my main tumblr, there will be a creative update. (Which tumblr depends on the content of the work, so this one will stay BSSMF-only.) Once a week it needs to be something finished, and Dan’s good stipulation is that it be a finished page. Page of what? Doesn’t matter. BSSMF, some other story, a journal comic, a one-shot, complete nonesense, exercise in color - it doesn’t matter. Every other day can be sketches, updates on my writing, painting experiments, papercrafts, I don’t care. Just creative effort daily.

These updates are my way of having a type of accountability. I’d really like to encourage my followers to engage with me about whatever project tickles their fancy. I’d like to do things like World-Building Wednesday or character building memes and answer your questions and just have fun with it. Both for my creativity and my sanity.

My last idea doesn’t affect you all so directly, and that’s to get a webcam. The internet is nice, but I’d like to see the faces and hear the voices of my friends more than once a year when we all have to gather for a wedding. That said, perhaps I’ll graduate to Skyping and even livestreaming in the future. It’s important to me to be making connections with other people as often as possible, with whatever means are available to me.

That’s what’s happening, and I hope you’ll support me as I try this out. I want to be happy and excited again, because I truly do love creating. I can’t let a rough situation get me down so badly without a fight, and I think I can do this with your encouragement. Thank you for understanding, and I’ll see you (on some tumblr) tomorrow! ^__^

Hey guys, I know it’s long and not all of you read my comic, but it’s not really about that so much as it’s about how I’m still sad a lot and what I’m going to try this month.

Additional note, I did finally get a work-at-home gig, so fingers crossed that I actually get my first teeny tiny paycheck and everything works, because even though it’s tedious work it’s still a job that turns into money that turns into self-confidence that means less sads.

I’ma draw you a dumb anime tomorrow. Right now I’m going to fill my face with lemon chicken and quit crying like a doofus.

Meet its twin. But this time it’s all the more frightening; the House has passed it despite Obama’s threats to veto. And by an alarmingly large margin, at that. CISPA threatens the US constitution’s guarantees of due privacy and free speech, permitting any government agency to access and transfer of vast amounts of data- from internet records to even the content of personal e-mails, and all without obtaining a warrant.

What’s even more disgusting than this bill actually making through the House is some of the arguments used to help it’s passage, and comments made by one of the bill’s biggest supporters admitting the bill helps big business while insulting opposers (whose is also speculated to have personal reasons for wanting CISPA made into law).

This threatens every element of your online presence. From personal emails to general activity, any government agency will have the ability to go fishing without consequence.

Please, PLEASE, sign the following petitions. You don’t even have to be a US citizen to sign most of them or act against CISPA, and please keep in mind that if this shit flies in America, who knows what country might use its example to do it, too.

Been playing Fire Emblem Awakening and all I wanna do is make everyone best friends and/or smooch. Also, I have played Dragon Age enough times to know that YOU MARRY THE PRINCE, DUH.

Between the soul-crushing headache I had for the last few days and the not-being-home before that, I’m pretty far behind on a bunch of stuff, so bear with me as I play catch-up. I have a few non-art projects that require my immediate attention, but after that, so much art.

Also, Dan lent me his 3DS and Fire Emblem and do you understand how hard it is to not just play that all day?! The one nice thing about that headache was I could prop myself up in a very specific position and play until my hands were numb. I want to draw little couples as I pair them off. But I also want everyone to be besties, so I made a spreadsheet. Oh lord help me.
